KDKA cameras caputured the gunfire just moments after a fierce battle errupted between Pittsburgh Police and 22 year old Richard Poplawski just after 7am on April 4th, 2009. Poplawski shot and killed zone-5 police officers Paul Sciullo II and Stephen Mayhle as the two rookies were answering a domestic disturbance call between Poplawski and his mother at their Stanton Heights home. Veteran officer Eric Kelly, on his way home after completing his overnight shift, heard the call for help and arrived at the scene. Poplawski then shot Kelly as he was attempting to aid Sciullo and Mayhle. Officer Timothy mcmanaway arrived at the scene and was shot in the hand while attempting to pull Kelly to safety, after he saw Kelly wave at him. mcmanaway sought cover and returned fire. Officer Jones suffered a broken leg when a fence he was climbing collapsed. A short time later, more officers, SWAT team members, and other law enforcement officers arrived and were fired on as well. A standoff between Poplawski and Pittsburgh Police lasted three hours. Poplawski finally gave up after being hit by a police bullet and was arrested. Bob Allen reports for KDKA

Mr. Schaeffer has finally spoken what I have been saying about the religious right for sometime now. Video topic to discuss - Is God exposing the hypocrisy and evil of religion from birthers, C-Street (the Family) doctrine, racist emails by Gov/state officials, white conservative pastors praying for Obama to die (Anderson & Drake), Pres. Obama could not speak to (mostly white) children (see my Texas video), Not 1 GOP congressman supporting Obama (no GOP Congressman is black), Fox news anchors (est. 85%) referring to the current admin. as socialist, communistic, marxist, & nazis, recent terrorists in US were White conservative males (Richard Poplawski, James Von Brunn & Scott Roeder), tea parties are 99% white, and on and on...

Maybe the media are collectively embarrassed by the way this case demonstrates how they play an important role in whipping up the far-right crazies out there -- and they should be. Because not only did Richard Poplawski avidly participate in white-supremacist online forums and right-wing conspiracy-theory sites, he also avidly consumed mainstream conservative media, particularly Fox. A few weeks ago, Poplawski posted a clip of Beck talking about FEMA concentration camps on the neo-Nazi Stormfront forum site. (You can see the clip from the show in question above.) Media Floats Talking Point That Gun Owners Are Domestic Terrorists Paul Joseph Watson www.prisonplanet.com Wednesday, August 12, 2009 The establishment media and the Southern Poverty Law Center are again floating the talking point that militia groups and worried gun owners are growing in the United States and that this could portend a violent act of domestic terror, despite the fact that every major domestic terror attack in the 1990s was carried out by the federal government itself, from Ruby Ridge, to Waco, to the Oklahoma City bombing. Militia groups with gripes against the government are regrouping across the country and could grow rapidly, according to an organization that tracks such trends, reports the Associated Press. The stress of a poor economy and a liberal administration led by a black president are among the causes for the recent rise, the report from the Southern Poverty Law Center says. Conspiracy theories about a secret Mexican plan to reclaim the Southwest are also growing amid the public debate about illegal immigration. The article cites people who own guns and implies that they are domestic terrorists or cop killers in the vein of Richard Poplawski, the Pittsburgh man who gunned down three officers during a domestic dispute earlier this year. The report cites a Homeland Security threat projection which states White supremacists and militias are more violent and thus more likely to conduct mass-casualty attacks on the scale of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. www.infowars.com Of course, the irony behind all this is the fact that all the major acts of violence in connection with the militia movement during the 1990s were committed by the government and federal agents. www.infowars.com

mediamatters.org Since President Obama's election, several conservative media figures have warned their audiences that Obama is planning to, in the words of Glenn Beck, "slowly but surely take away your gun or take away your ability to shoot a gun, carry a gun" or have suggested that a government effort to ban guns is likely.

An astonishing thing seems to have happened to the case of Richard Poplawski and the three dead Pittsburgh policemen: It's been turned into a story about dog pee -- and not about the fact that Poplawski was fueled by a toxic mix of white-supremacist/conspiracy-theorist paranoia and mainstream-media fearmongering, including from the likes of Glenn Beck and Fox News.

Eric Boehlert at Media Matters noticed yesterday that the New York Times completely ignored the white-supremacy aspect of the story, running an AP story that only briefly alluded to Poplawski's paranoiac fears and instead focused on the dog-pee-on-the-carpet angle. David Waldman at Daily Kos noted a similar trend.

The house where Richard Poplawski gunned down three Pittsburgh police officers on April 4th. After I took this video I ended up going up to the door and read the sign posted on the door which said something to the effect of the house still being a crime scene area and how it is property of the city/county until further notice. I also went around the back and saw all of the windows there boarded up, as well. In addition, there was still broken glass beneath the front window (to the right of the door) that I observed behind the two shrubs. Part of the walkway was removed due to it being blood-stained and thus becoming a piece of crime scene evidence. After talking to a neighbor who lived across the way, she informed me that her husband's truck had been shot up and the SWAT team came through her back yard (destroying her fence in the process) and then proceeded to park their tank in her driveway in regards to their ambush on the Poplawski residence. The neighborhood was definitely shaken by this entire event as I could tell from the general ambiance and aura of the community. This was very surreal for me while I was at this location considering how I feel about this event.
